Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us if you cannot find an answer to your questions.

  •  Sisterlocks are tiny uniform locks that are the result of a precision parting grid, and the use of a specialized tool used to place the hair into its locking formation. Sisterlocks also consist of at least 300 - 400 locks or more.  Most importantly Sisterlocks are installed by trained consultants who has taken the Sisterlocks class and is listed on the Sisterlocks website as a “Certified, Approved or Trainee Consultant”. Visit www.sisterlocks.com to find a consultant in your area.

  • Interlocks are larger uniform locks and that are installed via freeform by grabbing parts of the hair and starting a locking method, parting hair for a more cleaner look or brick-layering. Like Sisterlocks, a tool is used to place the hair into its lock formation. You do not have to be a Sisterlock Consultant to install Interlocks. Should you choose to have someone other than a Sisterlock Consultant install your interlocks, I HIGHLY suggest you research that stylist work by asking for pictures of his or her work.

  • While both styles are nice and contained, some of us still face issues in the work place (especially corporate) with having locks. With Sisterlocks, I can attest that this is not an issue. These small formed locks go un-noticed specifically in it’s beginning stage. The short curly locks are sometimes mistaken as a short curly afro or small “braids”. None is the wiser that locks are actually forming. Even lengthy Sisterlocks can be curled via roller sets (perm rods, lock loops, pipe cleaners, etc). Please refrain from using curling irons on your locks as you can scorch/burn your locks and damage it’s natural state. Interlocks are slightly larger and are noticed more. Now that society seems to be more accepting to us returning to our natural hair, its not as challenging to wear our tresses “locs” Interlocks as it was before.

  • You may have a touch of pain after a full loc re-tightening. Being that some are more tender headed you should probably consider your decisions.  If you are used to getting braids/extensions installed, you will feel no difference or worse tension.  While you do feel some tension during the process you should never walk away in pain or needing medication.  (Unless very tender headed)
  • Their are many customers who feel that the tighter the re-tightens the longer it will last. Here’s the down fall to super tight re-tightens; Thinning locs, loss of hair from scalp and edges start to thin.
  • Again, you should NEVER have pain hours and days later after a re-tighten. Also be aware of those who use the infamous “crochet tool” to re-tighten your locs. I’ve heard many clients complain about pain and soreness of the scalp is due to this tool. This tool rips the hair from the scalp and if inserted in the loc, it weakens it. If your locks are being maintained with this tool, please search for another consultant.

  • With just a click of a button, you can find us via “www.sisterlocks.com”. From Alabama to Wisconsin. Internationally in the Bahamas, U.S. Virgin Island, Jamaica to Kenya. All  “SisterlocksTM Consultants be it “Trainee, Approved or Certified” MUST and SHOULD ALWAYS be available via www.sisterlocks.com website consultant registry. PERIOD!
If wanting anything other than SisterlocksTM or Brotherlocks then choosing “anyone” to install “your” locks is entirely up to you. Now lets address choosing a SLC (Sisterlocks Consultant).
    • 1. Visit the Sisterlocks Official website as suggested above.
    • 2. Find the area of choice (state/city) where you want your Sister/Brotherlocks consultation/installation
    • 3. Choose a consultant.
  • Some SLCs via the Sisterlocks website have their website attached for your viewing. This way you can get a view of their location, work and for the most part their price list. While most of us acquire information via word of mouth there are other means of finding a SLC. Social media is definitely the new constant growing media frenzy, Yellow pages, Google, Yelp, etc. There are many Sisterlocks groups via Facebook and Instagram. Should you choose to inquire/search for a SLC thru social media ask A LOT OF QUESTIONS! Ask for pictures of their work, timing, how long they’ve been in business and most importantly their prices.
  • Anyone advertising to install Sisterlocks and not registered on the “Sisterlocks” website I highly suggest you do more research. Here are a few red flags of Sisterlocks imposters:

  1. “I add extensions to your Sisterlocks”. While this can be done, those of us who have taken the class “KNOW” that ONLY your natural hair is locked. NO extensions.
  2. “I can lock your hair in 3 to 5 hours”. NOT with Sisterlocks. Average time is 20 - 25 hours or more.
  3. “I can twist your hair and use a crotchet tool to retighten Sisterlocks…..NO NO AND NO!

Again do your research! Searching for a SLC via the Sisterlocks website is really your best choice. Schedule a consultation with a SLC and have your questions ready…..
